




Fiona Apple was eighteen when Tidal (1996, Work/Columbia) came out. The songs were written through her teens, straight from her journals. Tidal won her a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, via “Criminal,” and it opened the door for a generation of uncompromising singer-songwriters after her. She’s stayed fiercely independent since, including 2020’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which won two Grammys.
