Gorillaz. The virtual band dreamed up in 1998 by Blur's Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett. They met in 1990 when Hewlett interviewed Blur for a magazine, and ended up sharing a London flat in 1997. The concept came out of watching too much MTV and wanting to make a comment on it: four cartoon characters fronting music made by a genuinely staggering rotating cast of collaborators. 'Tomorrow Comes Today' is from the very beginning, off the 2001 self-titled debut that went triple platinum in the UK. Demon Days went six times platinum. They're arguably the most successful art project in pop history, and their ninth album, The Mountain, came out in February 2026, debuted at No. 1 in the UK, and was followed by a world tour.
