Mark Kozelek, formerly of Red House Painters, leads this San Francisco quartet. Ghosts of the Great Highway (2003, Jetset) is the acclaimed debut LP, five stars from AllMusic, and the critical consensus around Kozelek’s songwriting has held for over two decades. “Duk Koo Kim” is named for the Korean boxer Kim Duk-koo, whose death from a 1982 title-fight injury led boxing authorities to cut championship bouts from fifteen rounds to twelve. Kozelek has a recurring habit of naming songs after boxers, like “Salvador Sanchez” on the same album.
